Industrial Engineering courses and career (A Combination of Engineering and Management)
Industrial engineering uses the principles and methods of engineering analysis for the easier manufacture of products. It also aims at eliminating waste of time, money, materials, energy and other resources. Industrial engineers integrate people, technology and information to improve efficiency. Industrial engineering is a combination of mechanical engineering and management.
SUBJECTS TAUGHT: Industrial Engineering mainly comes under the stream of Science and Engineering. At the B.Tech level, the subjects covered include mechanical engineering, project management, human aspects of management, decision modelling and operations research. Industrial Management as a specialization is also available. The main objective of the course is to train students to equip them for middle level management profession in the industrial field. An M.Tech level programme in industrial engineering is equivalent to an MBA. In Kerala, B.Tech level industrial engineering programmes are very rare.
M.Tech: The following colleges provide higher education facilities (M.Tech) to meritorious Industrial Engineering B.Tech holders having valid GATE scores. Government Engineering Colleges, Sreekariyam, Thiruvananthapuram.
National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchirappally: BE/B.Tech holders with 60% marks in Industrial, Production and Mechanical Engineering are eligible for admission to M.Tech Industrial Engineering. Selection is based on entrance test or GATE score (www.nitt.edu).
IIT Kharagpur (www.iitkgp.ernet.in/mtech)- M.Tech Industrial & Engineering. IIT Kanpur (www.iitk.ac.in) – M.Tech and PhD in Industrial and Management Engineering.
PSG College of Technology, Peelamedu, Coimbatore (affiliated to Anna University) – ME or M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in industrial engineering (www.psgtech.edu)
National Institute of Foundry and Forge Technology (affiliated to Ranchi University), Ranchi – M.Tech in Manufacturing Engineering. B.Tech holders in industrial engineering with a valid GATE Score are eligible for admission.
National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) Mumbai, (www.nitie.edu) - PG Diploma in industrial management. GATE qualified first class engineering or technology graduates in any branch are eligible for admission.
CAREER PROSPECTS: Those who have higher qualifications and adequate managerial experience can attain top positions in the industrial or management field with attractive remuneration and incentives. |
