It is the year 2636 and aliens are attacking us yet again. Jimbo and Sully, two soldiers who happen to be descendants of Lance and Bill from the first two Contra games and look exactly like them, are sent into battle to neutralize the alien threat, save the planet, and blah blah blah yackety shmackety. If this plot sounds stupid, it is. But that's only because the American localizations of Contra and Super C were set in 1988 and 1990 instead of 2633 and 2634; you're actually playing as Bill and Lance. But no matter which storyline you use, Contra III is a mercilessly hard run and gun that will make you its bitch.

Syd Lexia: This game underscores the single biggest reason why Sega was never able to completely obliterate Nintendo in the American gaming market. Sure, Sega had the highly popular Sonic The Hedgehog games and the public perceived the Genesis to be the cooler system, but Nintendo had infinitely better third party support; Capcom, Square, and Enix all published a slew of great titles that were only available on the SNES. Konami was slightly more balanced than those companies, but its two biggest American releases of the early 90s were both only on Nintendo - Castlevania IV and Contra III. Sega's compensatory games, Bloodlines and Hard Corps, just weren't as good.

Contra III is one of the most revered games of the 16-bit era, and well it should be. Few games are as insanely difficult as playing The Alien Wars on the hardest difficulty, but few games are as rewarding. If you didn't didn't start gaming until after the end of the 16-bit era, play this game, and you'll realize just how fucking easy you've had it. The stuff you've been playing is bush league. It's kids' stuff. You've been playing wussy little games with 20 hours of lightly challenging gameplay sandwiched in between mediocre story sequences with terrible voice acting. You think you're hot shit because you beat Halo 3 and Heavenly Sword? You're not. You're a fucking bottle-fed baby. See, today's games are designed to be beaten; Contra III was designed to beat you. And it *will* beat you, over and over again. And if you play it, play it on an actual SNES. Cheating your way through the game with emulator save states won't impress anyone.
